Our laboratory is interested in one fundamental question: Why do neurons die in neurodegenerative diseases, and how can we stop it? To answer this question, we study Sigma-1 receptor (Sigma-1R), a protective protein that helps cells survive under stress. Because Sigma-1R plays important roles in many neurological disorders, we believe it could become an important target for future therapies. Our research focuses on two exciting areas. One is understanding how Sigma-1R maintains the health of the cell nucleus, particularly the nuclear envelope and nuclear pore, which act as the cell's "gatekeepers." The other is discovering new drugs that activate or inhibit Sigma-1R for the treatment of neurological diseases. We also investigate C9orf72-associated ALS and FTD, one of the most common inherited forms of ALS. In this disease, toxic proteins called dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) build up in brain cells, causing neuron loss and excessive inflammation. We aim to understand how these proteins damage the nervous system and how Sigma-1R can counteract their harmful effects. By combining molecular biology, cell biology, advanced imaging, animal models, and drug discovery, our lab seeks to bridge basic science with translational medicine. We welcome students who are curious about neuroscience and eager to explore how scientific discoveries can lead to future treatments for devastating neurological diseases.
